1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. Related technologies — local storage and session storage — do the same job with data held entirely in the browser rather than sent with each request. We use both, and we describe them together here because the practical effect on your privacy is similar.
Essential items are set as soon as you load a page because the site cannot function correctly without them. Analytics and functional items are set only after you choose "Accept All", or tick the relevant box under "Preferences", in the banner at the bottom of the screen.
2. Essential
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| pb_cookie_choice | Local storage | Records whether you accepted, rejected or customised cookies so the banner is not shown again. | 12 months |
| pb_session | Session cookie | Maintains page state and protects the contact form against automated submission. | Until browser closes |
| pb_csrf | Session cookie | Security token that validates form submissions originate from this site. | Until browser closes |
3. Analytics
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| pb_stats_id | First-party cookie | Distinguishes one visit from another so page views are not double-counted. Contains a random value, not your identity. | 13 months |
| pb_stats_session | First-party cookie | Groups pages viewed in a single visit to measure how readers move between guides. | 30 minutes of inactivity |
| pb_referrer | Session storage | Records which external page sent you here, so we can see which sources are useful. | Until tab closes |
4. Functional
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| pb_route_choice | Local storage | Remembers the corridor you last selected in the home-page route planner. | 6 months |
| pb_form_draft | Local storage | Keeps an unsent contact-form draft if you navigate away by accident. | 7 days |
| pb_contrast | Local storage | Stores a preference for reduced motion or higher contrast if you set one. | 12 months |
5. Third-party cookies
We do not run advertising, social plug-ins, embedded video players or comment widgets, so no advertising or social network cookies are set by this site. Our analytics is first-party and aggregated. If you follow an outbound link to a transport operator or tourism board, that site's own cookie policy applies from the moment you arrive there.
6. Changing your choice on this site
Your decision is stored in your browser, not on our servers. To change it, clear this site's cookies and storage in your browser settings — the banner will then reappear on your next visit and you can choose again. Selecting "Reject Non-Essential" prevents analytics and functional items from being written at all.
7. Browser-level opt-out instructions
- Google Chrome. Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies, and Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data to remove existing items. See Chrome cookie help.
- Mozilla Firefox. Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data, where you can block cookies and clear data for a single site. See Firefox cookie help.
- Safari (macOS). Safari → Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data, plus "Prevent cross-site tracking". See Safari privacy help.
- Safari (iOS/iPadOS). Settings app → Safari → Clear History and Website Data, or Advanced → Website Data to remove a single site.
- Microsoft Edge. Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Manage and delete cookies and site data. See Edge support.
You can also browse in a private or incognito window, which discards all cookies and storage when the window closes. Note that blocking essential cookies may stop the contact form working and will cause the cookie banner to reappear on every page.
8. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
We honour browser signals that indicate a general objection to tracking: where a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control header is present, we treat optional cookies as refused unless you explicitly accept them in the banner afterwards.
